Swimming upstream...
Iowa City is often named on of the best places to live, and with good reason. A community of just over 80,000 people, this strategic Midwestern city has a lot to boast about. Best in the nation schools, excellent health care, and plenty of high paying jobs are just the start. The University of Iowa affects the culture of the town in many ways. Lots of owner operated restaurants and shops populate the downtown area. Each summer brings the Iowa Summer of the Arts: featuring the Shakespeare Festival, an Arts Festival, the Iowa City Jazz Festival, the Landlocked International Film Festival, and Uptown Movie and Music nights. The Iowa Writer’s Workshop is the considered to be the best literature program in the country, and one of the best in the world! It is a applied to be a UNESCO city for literature. In short, Iowa City is a great place to live!

In Iowa City, post-Christian thought, and progressive-liberal ideology meet “American apple-pie” values. Christians often complain about the “direction of the cultural river”, and talk about how they don’t like what’s happening to culture. But if people want to affect change in the culture, they need to go to the river’s source. In order to impact the future you go to the universities. In order you to impact the artistic community you go to Santa Fe, to affect the music industry you go to LA or Nashville, and to have an impact on the literary world you go to Iowa City - home of the Iowa Writer’s Workshop. Iowa City is a center for progressive thinking and politics that prides itself on its “open and affirming” stance on a variety of social issues - and it has a university! Iowa City is one of the most educated cities in the United States with over 47% of residents holding a Bachelor’s degree, and over 27% holding a graduate degree. This is the head of the stream. The gospel speaks to all of life...what better place to plant an missional, gospel-focused church and begin to engage and transform culture by loving the city and those in it.
